GEAR UP Success Coach

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP)

The GEAR UP initiative is one of the most effective programs focused on increasing postsecondary enrollment rates of students in low-income communities nationwide. Empowered collaboratively amongst K-12 partners, institutions of higher education, state agencies, and community organizations, the national program aims to achieve three strategic goals:

  1. Increasing the postsecondary expectations and readiness of students.
  2. Improving postsecondary enrollment rates.
  3. Raising the knowledge of postsecondary options, preparation, and financing among students and families.

What does a GEAR UP Success Coach do?

The GEAR UP Success Coach works with the higher education institution and GEAR UP NC to support first-year college students from target high schools. The Success Coach aims to provide high-touch coaching and programming promoting student accountability, financial aid literacy, and personal development, stimulating an effective transition from high school to college.

GEAR UP Success Coach goals include the following:

  • Support incoming students with the secondary to postsecondary transition (application process, campus orientation, etc.)
  • Execute campus programming focused on academic preparation, financial literacy, commitment to completion, etc.
  • Proactively schedule coaching touch points throughout the semester to boost retention and academic persistence
  • Assist students in accessing academic support resources including tutorial services and the writing center
  • Outreach to college ready students at risk of not applying and/or enrolling
